  33   <p>IRC accounts require different information than many other types of
  34   accounts.  To create an IRC account, you must specify at least an IRC
  35   network and a nickname.  This page details the information you can
  36   provide for an IRC account.</p>

  45       <title><gui>Network</gui></title>
  46       <p>IRC is an open system that allows people to run separate IRC
  47       networks.  Each network is distinct and has its own users and
  48       chat rooms.  <app>Empathy</app> lists the most popular networks
  49       in the <gui>Network</gui> drop-down list.  You can add additional
  50       networks.  See <link xref="#networks"/> below.</p>

  53       <title><gui>Nickname</gui></title>
  54       <p>Your nickname is your unique name on the IRC network. Only one
  55       person on a network may use a given nickname.  If you get an error
  56       message that says <link xref="prob-conn-name" role="error-msg"/>

  61       <p>Some servers, particularly those on private networks, require
  62       a password to connect.  If you are authorized to use the network,
  63       the network administrators should provide you with a password.</p>

  66         <p>On some networks, nicknames can be registered using a service
  67         known as NickServ.  <app>Empathy</app> does not directly support
  68         nickname passwords.  On some networks, including the popular

  70         to NickServ, allowing you to set this field to identify yourself
  71         with NickServ.  See <link xref="irc-nick-password"/> for more

 135         <p>By default, <app>Empathy</app> uses UTF-8, a modern character
 136         encoding that can handle text from most of the world's languages.
 137         Another common encoding for English and some other Western languages

 141         <title><gui>Servers</gui></title>
 142         <p>An IRC network may have many servers you can connect to.  When
 143         you are connected to a server on a particular network, you can
 144         communicate with all users on all other servers on that network.
 145         You can add and remove servers for this network using the
 146         <gui>Add</gui> and <gui>Remove</gui> buttons.</p>
 147         <p>When a server is selected, click the field under <gui>Server</gui>
 148         or <gui>Port</gui> to edit it.  Alternatively, use the left and right
 149         arrow keys to focus the field, and press the space bar to begin
 150         editing.</p>
 151         <p>Select the check box in the <gui>SSL</gui> column to encrypt
 152         all communication with a server.  Note that this does not prevent
 153         other users on the network from seeing what you write on public
 154         chat rooms.</p>
